Into the South!
I'm writing this from Fredericksburg, VA. I left DC this morning and am working on a post about my very fruitful weekend there. I hope to publish some version of this soon. My plan is to go through Virginia on HWY 1, also called Jefferson Davis Highway. I'm definitely in the south now. I've seen numerous rebel flags on city signs and on bumpers. Yet, even here I've seen numerous Mexican businesses. I hope to be in North Carolina by Thursday, where I plan to meet with one of the farmworker organizations and then next Monday I'm scheduled to give a short talk at Piedmont High School in Unionville, NC. Two teachers I met in San Antonio at a 1999 NEH seminar on Integrating Latino Literature into the Secondary Classroom teach there and thought this would be an interesting issue for them to here more about. If I stay in places with internet access the next few days, I should be able to catch up on my posts.

Hola, my name is Lindsey and i am a student in Ms.Edwards Spanish 3 class. We are very excited to meet you this coming monday! In our class we have been discussing participation in the community and in life in general so im sure your stories will fit in great with our lesson plan. By the way Ms.Edwards was a little disgrunteled that you refered to her as two people but, none the less we cant wait to hear all about your travels.
Hello, Mr. Mendoza
I am a student of Mrs. Sherry Edwards of Piedmont High. She has told us that you are possibly comming to visit us either Friday September 28, 2007 or Monday October 1, 2007. From what she has told us about you I'm looking forward to meeting you and hearing what you have to say.
Sincerely,
Derrick Knotts

Hi Lou--
I'm looking forward to your next posting. But in the meantime, I have a "prompt" for you. I know that you managed to attend the ASA in Philadelphia last weekend. And I've been wondering what that conference/academic experience was like for you given the solitariness of the bike ride. I always get overwhelmed by conference buzz--so I imagine that ASA was especially surreal for you this year. Is that the case?
